SNAP, Food & Public Benefits

Accessing food assistance and essential public benefits

If you or your family is struggling to afford food or other basic needs, you may qualify for programs that provide real, significant help. SNAP, cash assistance, utility help, and free school meals are all available in Philadelphia.

Practical next steps

  1. SNAP — food assistance (food stamps)

SNAP provides monthly benefits on an EBT card that works like a debit card at grocery stores and markets. A family of 3 with low income can receive $500–$700/month. Apply through COMPASS at compass.state.pa.us or call 1-866-550-4355.

  2. Free and Reduced School Meals

If your household income qualifies, your children get free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch at school. Apply at the start of every school year through your school's main office.

  3. Food pantries and community fridges

Philadelphia has over 100 food pantries, many open to anyone without income verification. Philabundance.org has a pantry finder. Community fridges (always open, always free) are located throughout the city.

  4. LIHEAP — help with utility bills

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program helps low-income families pay heating bills in winter. Applications open in November. Apply through COMPASS. You can receive $200–$1,000 in utility assistance.

  5. PA Cash Assistance

Monthly payments to families with children when income is very low. Apply through COMPASS.

  6. WIC — nutrition support for mothers and children

WIC provides free healthy foods and formula for pregnant women, new mothers, infants, and children under 5 with low incomes. Philadelphia WIC: call 215-685-5220.

  7. Summer food programs for youth

Every summer, free meals are available to children and teens under 18. Text 'FOOD' to 304-304 to find the nearest site.
